The trustees of Mount Pleasant Bacup were asked to consider the possibility of building a new chapel "below Bacup" . The neighbourhood of Pippin Bank was thought to  be desirable and Mr J.M.Holt was asked to sell land for the purpose. He declined.. Mr John Maden of Rockliffe House grandson of the first Methodist in Bacup offered a site.  Wesley Place school was built in 1862  and the chapel in 1866.

The foundation stone was laid by Mr John Dawson a lay preacher who conducted the very first wedding at Wesley Place, between Mr Elias Barker of Rockliffe, to Miss Ellen Patchett of Facit. The couple were presented with a bible and Wesleyan Hymn book by John Maden of Rockliffe House. The chapel was demolished in 1966.
