Throstle Mill was built in 1837 and was run under the name of The Throstle Mill Company which consisted of four partners those being Maden, Hoyle, Baron and Bridge. The four being in partnership until December 1846 in 1846 John Maden bought the mill and built Oak House which stood on the main road in front of the house during the 1850's now developed into flats. In 1860 John Maden built Rockliffe House were he died in 1869. In 1920 the spinning department closed and and in 1933 part of the mill was bought by a carpet manufacturer.

Accidents and Fires at Throstle Mill.
1878 A Creeler got his foot caught in the machinery and before he could be pulled free two toes and his foot were badly crushed, the man developed lock jaw and died.
1915 A fire started in the store room over the boilers the Fire Brigade from Bacup under the command of Chief Officer Campbell arrived from Bacup and worked quickly to extinguish the flames.
1926 Two boys playing near the mill lodge noticed smoke issuing from one of the dust collectors Bacup Fire Brigade attended and quickly extinguished the flames.
1944 Night watchman James Maden, aged 73, of 101 Plantation Street Bacup was found dead in the mill.
