Bacup R.A.F Sergeant Killed

In Flying Accident. News was rerecived on Monday morning by Mr and Mrs M Mochan, of 17, Blackthorn Lane, Bacup, that theor eldest son, Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner John Alfred Mochan, R.A.F.  had been killed in a flying accident " somewhere in England ".  The intimation came in a official telegram. Sergeant Mochan was 20, in January, and had been in the R.A.F about a year. Prior to enlisting he worked at Blackburn, He was connected with Ebeneezer Baptist Church, Bacup, and was an old boy of Bacup and Rawtenstall grammar school. He was last home on leave some six weeks ago. The funeral will be of a semi military character. it to take place today at Bacup Cemetery.

KILLED IN ACTION

BACUP SOLDIER WHO HAD BEEN IN MIDDLE EAST TWO AND HALF YEARS

 

Mr. and Mrs. J.T Walsh , of 20 Gladstone Avenue Bacup, and formerly of Blackwood Road Stacksteads received official notification yesterday ( Friday ) week that their second son Trooper George Walsh 23 Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry, had been killed in action while serving with the middle east forces. Trooper Walsh who was called up in November 1939 had served in the Middle East for about two and half years, his last letter being received by his parents about three weeks ago. In civil life he worked at the Valley Supply Company's Farholme Mill, Stacksteads. A former scholar of St Josephs R.C school, Stacksteads, he had played football with St Mary's and St Josephs teams. Besides his parents, trooper Walsh, is survived by two brothers and four sisters. One of his brothers is serving in the Middle East.

DIED IN CAPTIVITY

BACUP SOLDIER PREVIOUSLY POSTED MISSING

Official notification was received on Tuesday by Mrs Jessie Nunn ( nee Schofield ), who with her three-year old son resides at 2 Cooper Street Bacup that her husband Pte, Alan Nunn 31 died on July 31st 1943 whilst a prisoner in Japanese hands.

In July 1943, Mrs Nunn was informed that her husband was missing in Burma from 7th April of that year, this being followed with word from an officer of his unit to the effect that he was last seen going to the assistance  of a wounded comrade. No news of him since that time had been received prior to this week. Joining up in July, 1940, Pte Nunn went overseas three years last December and was in India twelve months before going on the Burma Front. He was the elder son of Mr and Mrs William Nunn, of 1 Inkerman Street, Bacup, and is also survived by one brother serving in the Forces. In civilian life he was a slipper operative at Messer's J. and J. Mclerie's New Hey Mill, Bacup. For several years he was a member of the Bacup Ambulance Brigade and at one time connected with the scout movement.

CAPTURED AT SINGAPORE

BACUP POW’S DEATH IN THAILAND

 Official notification that her husband Gunner Terence Sutcliffe 34 125th Army Tank Regiment  R.A.  Died on 5th July 1943 while a Japanese prisoner in Thailand, was received on Monday by his wife Mrs Eleanor Sutcliffe nee Helm, formerly of 3 Long Buildings Farm, Dean, who with her two daughters, aged six and four years reside at 12 York Street Broadclough, Bacup.

The eldest son of Mr. J.W and the late Mrs Sutcliffe, 4 York Street, Gnr Sutcliffe was taken prisoner at Singapore on 15th February 1942 since when his wife as received just two cards from him. The last one being on 7th July 1944, and the first one twelve months previously.

Gnr. Sutcliffe, who was last at home in October 1941, had been in the army since 3rd March of the same year. For the last three months before he joined up he was employed at Broadclough Mill, Bacup, all his previous working life having been spent at Irwell Springs Printing Co’s works. He was connected with Doals Baptist Church.

Besides his wife and family and his father previously mentioned he is survived by a brother serving  in Italy and a sister.
