Bacup and Stacksteads have always had a big involvement when it came to sport in 1893 the Maden Swimming baths was opened built and gifted to the people of Bacup by the Maden family it hosted many swimming galas and competitions, and it was here that one of the most well known boy champion swimmers of Bacup learned to swim. In 1906 David Billington was the winner of the Mile Amateur Swimming Championship of the World and was a  record holder in other distances.

The same year female swimmer Maggie Scott was the 100 yards ladies national swimming champion. Another boy champion that the people of Bacup took to their hearts was Henry Townsend born in 1895 he was a championship walker.

 

In 1899 Bacup Cricket Club became the Lancashire League champions and in 1903 the Bacup Golf club opened its doors.  In 1913 the Bacup amateur football league was founded.

1922 - Bacup C.C and Rawtenstall C.C tied for Lancashire League Championship, both teams were fined for not playing the final match of the season to a result.

1951 - Everton Weekes, hit the highest Lancashire League aggregate, 1,518 runs
